seri kembangan labrador: before & after & after

can you tell from the first photo that this was a labrador retriever? if you asked 2 months back if this canine would survive and recover from this condition and a wound size of a 20 sen coin, without proper care, the answer was no. but he did.

i almost teared when i first heard his story from my mum and saw his condition. left at a rented house. unattended at most times. hair shredding. a deep wound on his back. purging. fed with leftover rice with added sugar was the instruction given to the maid by the late owner's wife who lived a few units away. the rented unit was meant for home tuitions it seems. i could not have imagined how would one pass the yard and even use the house! not at least walking pass smelling the unattended urine and feces. no one bathes or walks him. neighbour right next door started complaining about the smell. but yet no one did anything for months.

though not physically abused like most severe cases that you would see published by SPCA Malaysia, it was enough torture for us to see anything or anyone to live like that. so i emailed SPCA for help. SPCA inspectors came about 2 weeks later if i recalled. i wasn't home but lucky for this lab, my mum and two caring neighbours took over.

the late owner's wife was given a warning but because of this lab's unknown condition, SPCA could not take him in worrying that there may be a disease thread to others homed at SPCA. my mum and neighbours started feeding him with dog food, getting medication for him, cleaning him. when the SPCA inspectors came back 2 weeks later, they had smiles on their faces. the poor lab made it and his story was even published on SPCA's e-newsletter dated 07.11.08. he made progress but SPCA still could not take him in. we could not bring him home because we have already got two dogs of our own. and that is the maximum number for the size of my house.

lucky for him again, that was not the end. a neighbour managed to convince her family to allow her to bring him home. that was the beginning i would say. beginning of a new life. oh by this time, you should be introduced to this lab's name. no, not "Lucky". he was named "Beckham" by his late owner. so Beckham has a new home now, nearby. it took quite some time and effort getting Beckham back on his feet but it was worth while. really, kudos to my mum and neighbour, Cindy.

these photos were taken few days ago. can you recognise Beckham compared to the first photo and the screen capture of the SPCA e-newsletter? not only he could eat, sleep, walk, bark, pass motions properly now, he could run and even stand on two feet matching the height of an average teenager.

from what i see, Beckham has not only brought joy to this family but brought everyone closer. both families are good friends now. : )
well, the old saying...

dog is man's best friend.
